Baltimore County Office of Planning would like to thank the entire Turner Station community for hosting the Community Design Team at the Fleming Center for 6 days from May 28 - June 2, 2009. Thanks to your support and participation, the Turner Station charrette was a success. View the June 2 Closing Presentation. (PDF) On July 2, 2001, the Baltimore County Council passed a resolution sponsored by Councilman John Olszewski for the creation of the Turner Station Community Conservation Plan. After a year and a half of hard work on the part of the community and county representatives, the plan was adopted by the County Council on December 15, 2003. Since that time members of the community have been committed to implementing the recommendations from the community plan. Based on recommendations in the community plan, a new advisory committee has been established for the purpose of developing a housing revitalization and rehabilitation plan. The kick-off meeting for this effort was held on Monday, June 18, 2007 at the Fleming Center in Turner Station. The Turner Station Charrette Steering Committee is dedicated to preserving the historic nature of the community, while improving the quality of life for current residents and future generations of Turner Station by increasing homeownership opportunities and encouraging housing improvements. The Steering Committee will lead the community through a planning process called a charrette, in which residents work alongside urban designers to develop guidelines for infill development, housing rehabilitation, and homeownership incentive programs, as well as identifying potential for small neighborhood businesses. The Kick-off Meeting for the charrette was held on Thursday, April 30, 2009 at 7 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at St. Matthew United Methodist Church, 101 Avon Beach Rd, Turner Station, MD 21222. The Kick-Off Meeting was well attended and participants took part in a Visual Preference Survey. The Visual Preference Survey is one of the tools for the public to give feedback on planning and design alternatives and to participate in the formulation of the plan that will result from the Turner Station charrette. The value of the survey is in the range of opinions, the shared common ground, and the desires expressed by the public, giving a sense of what they would like to see in the community. View the results(PDF) of the visual preference survey.
Also, at the Kick-off Meeting, participants were given an overview of a housing rehabilitation program in East Towson. Learn more about the East Towson LEED Green Building Project. The Turner Station Charrette was held from Thursday, May 28 to June 2, 2009. Members of the Office of Planning's Community Design Team set up a design studio in the community in the gymnasium of the Fleming Center. For six-days the Community Design Team worked directly with the community to solicit input on issues related to the project and then to develop recommendations based on the community's ideas. Review the final charrette schedule. (PDF) Since June 2, the Community Design Team has returned back to their regular office in Towson but continues to refine the recommendations presented to the community in the June 2 Closing Presentation (PDF). The Community Design Team will return to the community in the Fall of 2009 to present again the final recommendations at a public meeting. The date for this meeting has not yet been determined. Please sign up for the Turner Station email newsletter and continue to check this webpage for updates.
