More about the Plan

The Western Baltimore County Pedestrian and Bicycle Access Plan is an "action plan" for constructing pedestrian and bicycle improvements in the urban area of the western side of Baltimore County in the First, Second, Third, and Fourth County Council Districts. The plan was developed by a technical advisory committee composed of representatives from the community and county and state government, based on the needs and desires expressed by the citizens who live or work in the area through several workshops. It identifies specific projects to be implemented and provides recommendations for supportive encouragement, enforcement and educational programs.

Why Promote Walking and Bicycling?

  • Improved Livability - People walking and bicycling get to know their neighbors and strengthen the activity and liveliness within communities.
  • Less Traffic Congestion - If everyone substituted just one or two automobile trips a day with walking or bicycling, traffic congestion could be significantly reduced.
  • Better Health - A healthy diet combined with regular physical activity can greatly reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and other ailments. Walking and bicycling are among the easiest and most enjoyable ways to exercise.
  • Sustainability - Reducing the total number of automobile trips saves energy and helps to improve the environment.
