Nursing Services for the Homeless/Emergency Shelters

Public Health Nurses provide health assessments and nursing intervention for individuals and families in the homeless and freezing weather shelters in Baltimore County. Primary nursing services include screening for communicable diseases, immunization status, pregnancy, supervision and guidance for chronic health problems such as hypertension and diabetes. Health education, counseling, referral and service coordination are provided to address the identified problems.

Referral sources include primary medical care throughout the, Primary Care Medically Indigent Program (PCMI), local hospitals, WIC Program, family planning, mental health and other preventive services at the Baltimore County Department of Health and health maintenance organizations. Services are coordinated with social workers, housing specialists, mental health counselors and, substance abuse counselors to help restore clients to a stable living environment.
