Colon Cancer


Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer in the United States and Maryland. Screening for colorectal cancer allows for the early detection of cancer when it is most treatable. The Cancer Prevention Program provides:

  • colon cancer education
  • free colon cancer screening for eligible Baltimore County residents who:
    • are age 50 and older; or
    • are under 50 with a family history of colon cancer; or
    • are under 50 with symptoms of colon cancer and physician referral
    • do not have health insurance to cover the cost of the screening
    • do not exceed the income limitation
  • cancer diagnosis and treatment services, if needed

Breast & Cervical Cancer

Breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer and the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women in the United States. Cervical cancer will claim the lives of more that 3,500 women in the United States every year. A Pap test is one of the most effective ways to detect cervical cancer. The Cancer Prevention Program provides:

  • breast and cervical cancer education
  • free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible Baltimore County residents who:
    • are female under the age 40 with symptoms of breast or cervical cancer
    • (women ages 40-64, see Women's Cancer Protection Program)
    • do not have health insurance to cover the cost of the screening
    • do not exceed the income limitation
  • cancer diagnosis and treatment services, if needed

Skin Cancer

Cancer of the skin, including melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer, is the most common of all cancers. There are more than one million skin cancers diagnosed each year in the United States. The Cancer Prevention Program provides:

  • skin cancer education
  • free skin cancer screening for eligible Baltimore County residents who:
    • are age 40 and older; or
    • are under 40 with symptoms of skin cancer
    • do not have health insurance to cover the cost of the screening
    • do not exceed the income limitation
  • cancer diagnosis and treatment services, if needed

Oral Cancer


There are many risk factors for oral cancer, including tobacco and alcohol use, sunlight exposure, age and certain viral infections. Men are twice as likely as women to develop oral cancer. The Cancer Prevention Program provides:
  • oral cancer education
  • free oral cancer screenings for eligible Baltimore County residents who:
    • are age 40 and older; or
    • under age 40 with symptoms, oral cancer or smoking history
    • do not have insurance to cover the cost of the screening
  • do not exceed the income limitation
  • cancer diagnosis and treatment services, if needed

Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer found in American men and the second leading cause of cancer death in men. During their lifetime, 1 in 6 men will develop prostate cancer. The Cancer Prevention Program provides:

  • prostate cancer education
  • free prostate cancer screening for eligible Baltimore County residents who are:
    • men age 50 to 70; or
    • men age 45 to 49 if African American or have a first degree relative diagnosed with prostate cancer; or
    • men age 40 to 45 if African American and have a first degree relative diagnosed with prostate cancer; or
    • men age 40 to 45 of any race and have two first degree relatives with diagnoses of prostate cancer before age 65

Lung Cancer


Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death for both men and women. More people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast and prostate cancers combined. Tobacco use is the primary cause of lung cancer. The Cancer Prevention Program provides:

  • tobacco use prevention education
  • cancer diagnosis and treatment services as funds allow, for Baltimore County residents who:
    • do not have health insurance to cover the cost of diagnosis and treatment
    • do not exceed the income limitation
