Cancer is the second leading cause of death in Maryland and the nation. One of every five deaths in Maryland is due to cancer. More than 25,000 Marylanders will be diagnosed with cancer this year and there will be more than 10,000 deaths from the disease. Maryland's cancer incidence and mortality rates are consistently higher than national rates. The Cancer Programs aim to reduce cancer mortality, health disparities and increase cancer screenings among minority populations through two cancer programs:
The Cancer Prevention Program (CPP), funded through grants from the Department of Health Mental Hygiene's (DHMH) Cigarette Restitution Fund, targets seven cancers with prevention, education, screening and treatment programs. Colorectal, breast, cervical, prostate, skin, oral and lung cancers are the seven targeted cancers.
The Women's Cancer Protection Program (WCPP), funded by grants from DHMH and the Centers of Disease Control (CDC), provides clinical breast exams, mammograms and Pap tests for women who qualify. Diagnosis and treatment services are also available through the Maryland Breast and Cervical Cancer Diagnosis & Treatment Program.
The Baltimore County Cancer Coalition, which is comprised of individuals and representatives from hospitals, minority organizations and community agencies, works collaboratively with the Cancer Programs staff to promote the services of the Cancer Prevention Program and the Women's Cancer Protection Program.
