Station 5 - Halethorpe

Station 5 serves Halethorpe and the surrounding communities in Baltimore County, Maryland.

HistoryStation 5's motto is, "Last Line of Defense."

From Sept. 22 to Oct. 17, 1927, Engine 5 was detailed to the B&O Railroad Fair of the Iron Horse. The event honored the 100th anniversary of the B&O Railroad, and it drew around 1.3 million visitors, with an average daily attendance of over 50,000. The Fair was held in the what is today's industrial park at Halethorpe Farms Road and Hollins Ferry Road.  The Catonsville engine filled in at the Halethorpe fire house each day of the fair.

Fires and Rescues

Significant fires and rescues involving Station 5:

  • Sept. 25, 1961 -- Cave-in near Allcroft Road, Halethorpe, resulted in the death of a young boy.
  • Halethorpe Station #5 participates in many mutual aid calls in nearby Anne Arundel and Howard counties and Baltimore City.June 28, 1965 -- Multi-alarm fire at Linde Air Products, Benson Court, Violetville, "C" shift.  Crews were relieved because of toxic smoke inhalation. Emergency recall for "B" shift.
  • Aug. 22, 1972 -- "B" shift, 5/6 alarm fire at Washington Aluminum, Knecht Avenue, Violetville, $2 million loss.
  • Feb. 26, 1974 -- "B" shift, UMBC Patapsco Hall, Arbutus, $60,000 loss
  • Jan. 3, 1975 --"A" shift, four-alarm fire at Sealy Mattress/Maryland Bedding, 3900 block of Washington Boulevard, $500,000 loss.
  • Dec. 15, 1978 -- "C" shift, three-alarm fire with multiple rescues, Beltway Motel, 3648 Washington Boulevard, Halethorpe.  This was the second call for new E-5 on its second day in service.
  • April 28, 1985 -- "A" shift, six-alarm fire, Maryland Housing/Southwest Industries,  5805 Southwestern Blvd., Halethorpe. Fire crews remained at the scene for several days.
  • March 13, 1995-- Two-alarm fire at Rental Tool & Equipment Company, 1709 Sulphur Spring Road, Halethorpe.
  • Oct. 15, 1995 -- Three-alarm fire, Hollywood Movie Theater, 5509 Oregon Ave., Arbutus
  • July 14, 1997-- Nine combined alarms from the County & City, 1800 S. Caton Avenue, City/County line
  • June 8, 1999 -- "D" shift, pedestrian Bridge collapse, I-695 Beltway Inner Loop, Arbutus, one fatality.
  • Jan. 13, 2004 -- Four alarms, tanker explosion, I-95 Northbound at I-895, Howard County, Multi-jurisdictional, "A" shift.  Tanker truck, carrying gasoline, fell from I-895 overpass onto NB I-95, exploding and involving multiple vehicles. Four people and a pet died.
  • May 14, 2005 -- "D" Shift, 6 alarm fire, B-Green Warehouse, 3800 block of Washington Blvd., Halethorpe. Units from multiple jurisdictions responded.  Reserve Engine 5 (old E-4) and Truck 5 sustained significant damage from radiant heat.
  • Feb. 18, 2006 -- 3-alarm fire, "D" shift,  Riverchase Apartments, 5600 block of Ringwood Drive, Relay.

Engine 5 is a 2005 American LaFrance Eagle MFD, 1500 GPM pump/750 gal. tank.
