Station 3 serves Woodlawn and the surrounding communities in Baltimore County, Maryland. Engine 3 currently responds to more calls than an other engine company in the Baltimore County Fire Department.
On March 2, 1932, at 4:15 p.m., Engine 9 was placed in service. From Feb. 2, 1939 through Jan. 27, 1971, the Woodlawn station operated the only career tank truck in the history of the Department. Engine 9 was renamed Engine 3 on Nov. 4, 1943.
Medic 3 was placed in service on Aug. 11, 1990.
On June 17, 1994, county officials broke ground for a new, three-bay, drive-through station at 7223 Windsor Mill Rd. The new station opened in 1996.
On January 1, 1999, EMS 8 was assigned to Station 3. The shift complement increased to eight.
A computerized journal became part of station life on Jan.1, 2002, replacing the handwritten logbooks that had been used for more than 100 years.
On Sept. 16, 2006, FS William Saunders retired after 39 years of service, 37 of which were served at Station 3. Of the 285 members who have served the station, no one has exceeded FS Saunders' record of 37 years.
From 1996 to 2007, Engine Company 3 has responded to more calls than any other company in the Baltimore County Fire Department.
