How Do I Get A Job as a Firefighter, EMT or Paramedic?

Employment Notice!

The Baltimore County Fire Department is now accepting applications for the position of Paramedic. The application deadline is September 14, 2008, 11:59 p.m. A description of this position, as well as an application, is available online. Study Guide

At any time, prospective employees can receive notification about the next open application period by submitting a "Job Interest Card" that will add your name to an automatic e-mail list.  Click on the "EMS," "Fire & EMS," and "Public Safety" category boxes. Then complete the required fields at the bottom of the page, and submit your request.  This will allow you to be notified for one year after the date of submission whenever the Fire Department is accepting applications.

Fire Department Positions

The Baltimore County Fire Department offers three different entry level positions:

  • Probationary Firefighter

Employees hired into any of these three classifications serve a probationary period of two years. All new hires should expect to remain in the classification for which they were hired for the entire probationary period. Applicants are not required to possess any certificates or certifications for probationary, entry-level firefighter or EMT positions; certifications are required of applicants for paramedic positions.

The required minimum qualifications are:

  • Must have a high school diploma or an appropriate high school equivalency.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a non-provisional, non-commercial, class C Maryland driver's license with less than four points.
  • Must be at least 18 years old at time of application.
  • Must pass a physical examination, comprehensive background examination and a drug test.
