ATTENTION: If your EMT-B expires June 30/December 31, you will soon be receiving a card in the mail from MIEMSS stating that your certification is about to expire. Don't worry - if you have attended all three days of EMT-B continuing education through the Fire Rescue Academy, you will automatically be submitted for recertification. The MIEMSS continuing education website will NOT reflect these 24 hours of continuing education. You should receive your new EMT-B card by the middle of June/December. If you do not receive your card, contact Instructor Peggy Anuszewski at the Fire Rescue Academy, 410-887-7523 or manuszewski@baltimorecountymd.gov. If you are an IV-Technician, please view the IV-Tech recertification page for additional information.
Maryland EMT-B recertification is required every three years. BLS providers expire in either June or December. EMT-Basics wishing to renew their certification must document and submit the following on a MIEMSS approved form before their expiration date (NOTE: career members are handled by the FRA):** Current Affiliation with a BLS EMS Operation Program.
** Successful completion of an EMT-B Skills course (S), which has been approved by MIEMSS. (12 hours)
** Completion of a minimum of twelve (12) hours of continuing education credits broken down in the following manner:
4 hours of Medical (M)
4 hours of Trauma (T)
4 hours of Local Option (L)
Baltimore County providers may obtain their refresher training in one of two ways:
Option 1 (Career only): If you attend all EMS refresher training offered by the FRA, you will complete all recertification requirements. Two individual courses are offered annually; one four-hour course is conducted by the EMS District Officer and one is offered by the FRA. All annual courses are required for refresher course credit.
Option 2: A MIEMSS approved 24-hour EMT-B Refresher Course is another way of obtaining both the skills and continuing education required for renewal. The Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute (MFRI) offers EMT-B Refresher Courses meeting these requirements. All classes must be attended to receive credit.
Option 3: All of the above requirements (12 hours skills and 12 hours continuing education) may be obtained independently of each other. Option 3 can not be combined with Option 2.
The month prior to your expiration, you will receive a reminder notice from MIEMSS. If all requirements are met, your paperwork will automatically be submitted and you should receive your certification card. If you do not receive your certification card by the 15th of the month you expire, contact Instructor Anuszewski at the FRA (x7523).
