Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to Firefighter Bridge

The EMS to Firefighter Bridge allows current career members of the Baltimore County Fire Department who are EMTs or Paramedics to be cleared to function as firefighters on suppression equipment.

Prerequisites

Firefighter II (MFSPQB, NPQS, IFSAC, or DOD/IFSAC certification)

Process

  1. Applicants must print and sign the EMS to Firefighter Bridge Receipt of Packet (PDF) and forward it to the Fire Rescue Academy (FRA). The interested person will then be placed on a roster indicating that they are working on the process.

  2. Applicants must then download and complete the EMS to Firefighter Bridge In-Station Objectives Packet (PDF). Officers must sign appropriate areas indicating applicant is proficient in each skill.

  3. When an applicant states they have completed their packet, their officer will request a test date via a Form 5.

  4. Once reporting to the FRA, the candidate will perform the SCBA Maze followed by eight Basic Firefighter Skills Cards (PDF). If a candidate completes all of the requirements they will be cleared to function as a firefighter.

Failure of Skill Stations

If an applicant fails one station they can retest on the same day after receiving remediation for the failed skill and signing a Form 51.

If an applicant fails two or three stations, remediation will be conducted at the member's station with their company officer. A Form 51 must be completed for each by the company officer and the candidate must schedule a retest via a Form 5 no earlier than two weeks from the initial test date. All Form 51s and the new packet must accompany the candidate on the day of the retest.

If an applicant fails four or more stations, or if the applicant fails any station during the retest, the applicant must return to their field assignment and retrain with their officers. They will not be able to retest within a three month period. A Form 51 for all failed skills as well as a new In-Station Objectives packet must be completed with the company officer before the candidate can schedule a retest. The officer is to schedule the retest via a Form 5 no earlier than two weeks from the initial test date. All Form 51s and the new packet must accompany the candidate on the day of the retest.
