To become a back-up Fire Apparatus Driver Operator (FADO) in the Baltimore County Fire Department, you must have the following credentials:
1. Be a career firefighter (off probation) in the Baltimore County Fire Department. This includes EMT/FF, FF/EMT and PM/FF.
2. Possess a class A or class B, commercial or non-commercial driver's license.
a. Maryland licensed candidates:
MD NCDL-A or MD CDL-A: allows holder to be turned in on all apparatus in the fire department inventory
MD NCDL-B or MD CDL-B: allows holder to be turned in on apparatus over 25,000 pounds. This includes engines, decon units, hazmat unit and towers.
b. Out-of-State driver candidates must hold a Class A or Class B driver's license. If candidate holds an out-of-state Class C license, they must successfully complete a practical driving test by the FRA, based on MVA standards. Out-of-state drivers will be issued a Baltimore County Fire Department (BCoFD) authorization card.
3. Successful completion of the following courses:
For engine driver: MFRI EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operator's Course)
MFRI Pump Operator
For truck driver: MFRI EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operator's Course)
MFRI Aerial Apparatus Operator
3. Fill out the applicable forms for the driver certification desired. Print off a copy of the applicable form. With the station officer and FADO, fill out the appropriate forms. (Select titles to bring up forms. Forms below are in pdf format.)

For truck driver: FADO - Truck (Baltimore County form)

4. Contact the FRA at 410-887-7523 to schedule a practical test date. Completed FADO forms and copies of certifications/licensure must be brought to the practical test.
