Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of current and future generations to meet their own needs.
To improve environmental sensitivity and sustainability of government operations. Also, to develop a permanent Sustainability Policy and Program through which Baltimore County will implement sustainable practices. In addition, work will be done with the private sector to improve environmental practices. The Baltimore County Administration in conjunction with the County Council established an initiative to develop a Sustainability Strategy for Baltimore County. The strategy is intended to provide the organizing framework for what needs to be done by the County and identify future areas of interest and need to ensure that today's generation maintains our quality of life without diminishing the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Through the collaboration of the County Administration and the County Council, the Baltimore County Sustainability Network (BCSN) was created including representatives of major conservation organizations, the private sector and departments in Baltimore County involved with growth management, operations and the built environment. Four primary areas have been addressed as main components to the strategy: - Management of our natural resources
- Operations of County facilities
- The current status of the environment
- Education and Outreach

In the Works: The Baltimore County Green @ Work Energy Challenge "The “Green at Work” project focuses on encouraging county employees to become more energy conscious of their everyday tasks. A “Green @ Work Energy Challenge” has been created where employees get to pledge online to one or more actions that lead to reductions in energy use. Bi-monthly articles are sent via email on different sustainable issues as well. This project also provides resources for employees that will be available for residents and business owners in the near future. Revised November 10, 2009
