1812 Announcement
December 1, 2011
Ladies and gentlemen, it is great to be here with all of you today at Martin State Airport.
To most Americans, the War of 1812 is just a footnote in our history-- the second, less famous war against the British, a war most memorable for its contribution as the inspiration for our national anthem. But here in Maryland, we know it as far more than just a simple skirmish with the British. The War of 1812 was a fight for the future of this nation and without the bravery of those Americans who defended our shores, particularly those on the fields of North Point and the barracks of Fort McHenry, we would not be the country we are today.
Bicentennial
That is why Maryland is particularly excited to give the bicentennial of the War of 1812 the commemoration it deserves.
For 32 months, every jurisdiction in the state will be taking part in this celebration which kicks off at the Star Spangled Sailabration in June of 2012. This international maritime and air festival promises to be worthy of our proud heritage because when it comes to air shows, no one is better than the Blue Angels.
Blue Angels
On June 16 – 17 the Blue Angels and numerous other air show acts will perform over downtown Baltimore City. And Baltimore County will be proud to host the Blue Angels right here at Martin State Airport, where there will be a display event, including planes on the ground, as well.
We look forward to getting the Star Spangled Spectacular off to a great start and to giving people throughout the region additional opportunities to learn more about the Blue Angels and get a close up look at some of the planes in the air show. This is going to be a great event, and I want to thank everyone who is working so hard to make it happen.
Now, it is my pleasure to turn the podium over the Maryland Department of Transportation’s Deputy Secretary Darrell Mobley.
