GM Groundbreaking
May 17, 2011

Thank you for those kind words, Bill. Ladies and gentlemen, it is a great "green" day in Baltimore County. And we are all glad that Dr. Steven Chu, President Obama’s Energy Secretary, and UAW International President Bob King could be here with us to celebrate the important role this GM plant is making to our energy future.

When GM became the first U.S. automaker to build hybrid transmissions, where did they go?  Straight to Baltimore County.  When GM decided to establish itself as the first U.S. automaker to develop and manufacture electric motors where did you go? Right back to Baltimore County. And who is going to help GM lead the world in the future of automobile manufacturing? The men and women of General Motors’ White Marsh Plant, that’s who. Each of you made this plant the success that it is today, and you are going to help secure the economic future of this company, this county, and this country.

Baltimore County is proud to join GM on the cutting edge of the automotive industry.  This expansion represents a significant investment in Baltimore County, in green jobs, and efficient use electric motor technology. The products are green, the roof is solar, and the entire facility is land-fill free – even this floor is green. On behalf of the people of Baltimore County, I want to thank General Motors for being good stewards of our environment. We are proud to have you in our community, leading our future. Good luck, and I can’t wait to see the first electric cars on 695 powered by motors built right here in Baltimore County.
