Memorial Day Message

May 31, 2004

As We Remember

In the 228 years since the original 13 colonies declared their independence from Great Britain, nearly 800,000 brave men and women have given what Abraham Lincoln called "the last full measure of devotion," sacrificing their lives in defense of the freedoms and ideals for which this country stands.

Each year, we as a nation offer the last Monday of May as a day of recognition and honor for those who have given so much. It is a fitting tribute, and one well earned.

As we remember those who have died in defense of our nation, we should also take a moment to remember that devotion is shown in many ways, and sacrifice comes in many forms.

Special Recognition

In addition to the soldiers, sailors and airmen who make up our full-time Armed Forces, we are blessed to be protected by hundreds of thousands of citizen soldiers. Our Armed Forces Reservists, who live and work side by side in our communities, but are willing to set their normal lives aside when our country is threatened.

There are 152 reservists employed by Baltimore County. They are men and women I would like to single out for special recognition this Memorial Day.

In every department the work of County employees is, at its core, service. Our employees work long hours on behalf of county residents, maintaining roads, putting out fires, policing our streets and providing dozens of other services. They are essential to quality of life in our communities.

It is truly remarkable that these 152 Baltimore County employees would choose to offer themselves for military service as well.

Active Duty

In the two years since the terrible events of September 11, 2001, 65 county employees have been called to active duty in the United States Military, 12 are serving right now. Some have been gone from their homes and families for as long as a year.

I have tremendous respect for the 152 county employees, already devoted public servants, who take on this additional burden. Whether out of patriotism, a sense of duty, or for personal reasons, these brave citizens have willingly accepted the potential disruptions and danger of service in the reserves. I don't know why they do it, but I am grateful that they do.

So far, all of our reservists who have returned home have returned home safely. This Memorial Day, as we remember with solemn ceremony those who have died for freedom, let us also honor the living, those who have not been called to make the ultimate sacrifice but have sacrificed none the less.

To all 152 county employees who serve in the reserves, and to all reservists, you have the thanks of grateful community. Our hearts and prayers are with you.
