Announcement of the Early Childhood Action Committee
December 17, 2003

Good Morning.  Thank you for coming to Drop In Story Time at the Randallstown Library.  Programs such as Drop In Story Time, sponsored by the Baltimore County Public Library, play a valuable role in the education of our young people today.

By engaging these young minds we are equipping our youngest citizens with the skills they will need to succeed when they enter a formal education program. Early Childhood Education paves the way for our future leaders of tomorrow to enter school a little brighter, and a little better prepared, having benefited from early cognitive engagement at the young ages of 0-3.

Because of the importance education plays in early childhood - Today we are announcing the formation of an Early Childhood Action Committee in Baltimore County. This new Committee, formed today with the signing of the Executive Order you see before you, will focus on developing a long-term strategy to improve school readiness among children aged 0-3.  Paying special attention to ways we can assist parents in preparing their children for school.

This Committee will: improve the collaboration among existing early childhood care providers, increase the effectiveness of existing programs, inform parents about the existence of such programs, educate parents about what they can do to help their children enter school ready to learn, and identify untapped state, federal and private funding streams for school readiness programs.

This initiative is the latest way Baltimore County is helping strengthen children, strengthen families, and strengthen communities.

On behalf of Baltimore County, I am proud to announce the formation of the Early Childhood Action Committee, and without further adieu will now sign the Executive Order.

Here's to Early Childhood Education and to the successful continuation of Baltimore County's strong tradition of academic excellence.
