Next Steering Committee Meetings

We welcome past members and new faces as we begin another phase of our program – implementing the Forest Sustainability Strategy.

Meeting Time and Location

The Steering Committee meetings will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Sherwood House in the Cromwell Valley Park. Please note as we announced previously that this meeting is a week earlier than our normal meeting in June. All are welcome to attend.

Directions

Exit 29 from the Baltimore Beltway; proceed east on Cromwell Bridge Road approximately 1 mile, to Park entrance on the left.

Agenda for June 19 Meeting

The June meeting will feature three presentations about deer, which studies are showing are increasingly disrupting natural regeneration of our forests. What can be done and what are the experiences of agencies and others involved with deer control?

Our speakers will include:

Phil Norman, Deer Project Manager for the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks, will share his experience leading one of Maryland's most successful local government deer control programs. Jacob Dunty, Consultant with Whitetail Remedies, will share his company's experience with providing deer control services to private landowners and community associations, including organic repellent spraying, bow-hunter herd management, and deer ex-closures fencing. Rich Pouyat, Researcher Forester with the USDA Forest Service, will share information about ongoing deer exclosure research in Maryland.

Minutes

Minutes for recent meetings of the Steering Committee, including the March 27, 2007 meeting (speaker on Gypsy Moth) and the April 24, 2007 meeting (speaker on Alliance for the Bay's Forestry for the Bay program) are now posted on our web page under the 'Steering Committee' header the user name is deprm and the password is environment.

Gypsy Moth Update

Since Bob Tatman of MDA's Forest Pest Management Program spoke at our March meeting, the State has completed spraying for the 2007 Cooperative Gypsy Moth Spray Program. A total of 15 forest blocks in Baltimore County were treated, totaling about 3,859 acres, with the largest concentration at Oregon Ridge Park and in the Prettyboy Reservoir watershed vicinity. The County is contributing 30 percent of the $115,300 program. Detailed information about the areas sprayed and dates treated, as well as other useful information about Gypsy Moths (note tab on left for homeowner information) is available on the MDA web page.
New SAF Report Available
