Enterococci are a type of fecal Streptococci present in the intestinal tract of warm-blooded animals. Enterococci, when associated with sewage, have been found to have a significant correlation with swimming-related gastrointestinal illness. Enterococci are less likely to die off in salt water, and therefore are used for tidal water monitoring.
