Tree-Mendous Maryland Program in Baltimore County

This is a picture of pine cone on a White Pine tree.

The White Pine is just one of the many species available.

Fall 2009 Program Begins in September

The Baltimore County Department of Environmental Protection and Resource Management (DEPRM) is once again pleased to partner with the Maryland Department of Natural Resource's (DNR) in the state's Tree-Mendous Maryland Program, by coordinating the free delivery of trees to citizens and community groups in Baltimore County.

This state program was designed to provide citizen groups with an inexpensive way to obtain trees and shrubs for planting on public lands and within community open spaces only. Examples are parks, school grounds, municipal streets, government facilities, and homeowners associations’ open spaces.  Read below for additional information related to Baltimore County's partnership with the Tree-mendous Maryland Program!

Before you start

Planning advice and assistance is available from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Forest Service at 410-665-5820, or from DEPRM's Tree-Mendous MD Program Coordinator at 4140-887-4488 x242.

Form a greening committee in your neighborhood.  The DNR Urban Forester assists community greening committees when planning large plantings on street easements or in community association open spaces.  After selecting sites that the greening committee agrees would benefit from tree planting, permission to plant must be obtained from the appropriate owner/public agency.  You will also need to contact Miss Utility at 1-800-257-7777 to obtain information about possible underground facilities on your site.  All plans for municipal street tree plantings are required by law to be approved by the DNR Urban Forester.  Call for assistance at (410) 665-5820.

If you plan a streamside planting, before you proceed with your plan, please call Baltimore County DEPRM to determine if your stream buffer may be disturbed due to a County stream restoration project.  For information regarding site ownership or County stream restoration plans, please e-mail or call the Baltimore County Tree-Mendous Maryland Coordinator at 410-887-4488, ext. 242.

Choose your trees

Each year, the Tree-Mendous Maryland Program offers mostly native tree and shrub species (PDF) during both spring and fall planting seasons. Typically, major tree species are offered at between 5 and 8 ft. tall, while smaller ornamental trees, and shrubs range from 1.5 to 5 ft. tall; all are containerized. This season plant prices range from $18 to $32.

There are hundreds of great trees that grow well in our area. Homeowners can choose the "right tree for the right place" by reading the information on the species description list. Give thought to the location for the tree to determine if the space lends itself to a large, medium, or small tree.  Keep in mind what the mature size of the tree will be and if there are any overhead or below ground wires or utilities where the tree will grow. Miss Utility should be contacted at 1-800-257-7777 to obtain information about possible underground facilities on your site.

Ordering your trees

Print a copy of the DNR order form, complete the order, and make out the check to Shemin Nurseries. All orders are taken on a "first-come, first-served" basis and will be subject to species availability.  Mail the completed form and the payment as soon as possible to Tree-mendous Maryland at the address below.

Do not send the check or the original order form to Baltimore County! You will receive a confirmation card in the mail with an order number from the MD DNR. If you decide to pick up your order, please call Shemin Nurseries at 410-666-0720 to arrange the pick up, and be sure to bring your order confirmation card with you, but see below for details on free delivery. Should you decide to pick up your trees, at the Shemin nursery, you must do so by May 21, 2009.

Free delivery

For orders of ten or more trees, if you would like Baltimore County to deliver your trees directly to your community at no charge, please notify the Baltimore County Department of Environmental Protection & Resource Management (DEPRM) no later than October 16, 2009.

Mail or fax a copy of your pre-paid order, a contact name and daytime telephone number, and the address for your preferred delivery location to

Planting Your Trees

The trees will be delivered to a designated site in your community. You will be contacted to confirm the day and place of delivery. Planting and maintenance instructions will be provided with each delivered order. Plant your trees as soon as possible after delivery, and make plans to water regularly. Before planting, keep the trees shaded and the root balls moist. If you have any questions about tree delivery in Baltimore County, please contact the County Tree-Mendous Program Coordinator at 410-887-4488 ext. 242.

The Maryland DNR offers free tree planting and maintenance workshops each year. Contact the DNR Urban Forester at 410-665-5820 for times and places.  The knowledge you gain will help ensure the successful growth of your Tree-Mendous trees.

Is your local school a Maryland Green School?

Designated Green Schools are eligible to receive free trees with their Tree-Mendous Program tree orders. Free tree delivery is also provided by DEPRM. For information, contact the County Tree-Mendous Program Coordinator at 410-887-4488, ext. 242.

DNR Gift of Trees Program

Memorial trees may also be purchased by individuals or groups for planting in special groves to honor loved ones and friends. Join the thousands of Marylanders who recognize that a gift of trees is a lasting tribute. More information may be found on the DNR web site section for the Gift of Trees or call the DNR Tree-Mendous MD Program Coordinator at 410-260-8510.
