Chesapeake Bay license plates are the key source of revenue for the Chesapeake Bay Trust, a private, non-profit, grant-making organization established by the Maryland Legislature in 1985. 

The Trust awards grants to schools, non-profit organizations, and public agencies for a variety of important initiatives, ranging from schoolyard habitat projects, to marsh and bay grass plantings, and oyster bed and shoreline restoration.
