| |  | The following are guidelines recommended for the removal and proper disposal of asbestos shingles. Asbestos is a known carcinogen and by following a few simple guidelines the risk of exposure to you and your neighbors can be greatly reduced. A heavy-duty ground cloth should be used to cover the ground beneath the shingles. The ground cloth should be extended several feet beyond the wall containing the shingles. The ground cloth should be secured to the base of the wall at least one foot (1) above the ground using duct tape or other similar material. All molding, trim, framing or other features should be removed to allow for easy access to the shingles.
Removal should begin with the upper row of shingles. A wide blade instrument such as a scrapper or putty knife should be used to reduce the risk of damage to the shingles. Hammers or other tools which will break the shingles should not be used. Shingles should be placed into a box, bucket etc., and lowered to the ground. Dropping or sliding shingles increases the risk of breakage.
Shingles should be packaged in a strong box lined with a plastic trash bag. After the box is filled, the bag should be twisted and tied to prevent release of dust and fiber during transport.
The ground cloth can be folded (from the outside in) and placed into a trash bag for disposal with the shingles. If the ground cloth is to be re-used, it should be cleaned with a wet mop, and the mop head should be disposed of along with the shingles.
Shingles and associated waste materials should be taken to the "homeowners" area of the Eastern Landfill and placed into the appropriate roll-off dumpster. Contractors wishing to dispose of asbestos shingles must contact the Department of Environmental Protection and Resource Managment at 410-887-3745 to obtain the necessary approvals.
