Q. Where can I get a list of new and expanding businesses?

A. The Department of Economic Development maintains a  monthly listing of companies the Department has actively worked with or is aware of that are expanding.  With more than 20,500 businesses in the County, the Department does not attempt to track all business expansions and attractions.
New and Expanding Businesses

The Maryland State Department of Assessment and Taxation (SDAT) provides copies of its data sets through a contactor. You can obtain prices, formats, production schedules, etc. from Specprint, Inc. (410) 561-9600.

Q. Where can I find a business directory of Baltimore County companies?

A. The Department of Economic Development does not maintain a listing of the more than 20,500 businesses in Baltimore County.   The Baltimore County Public library provides a www.ReferenceUSA.com as a free service to residents.  ReferenceUSA allows for customized searches based on user-specified criteria to create a listing of businesses.  Additional information can be found under Business and Careers at www.bcpl.info/databases.html or by contacting the reference desk at you Baltimore County Public Library branch.

Q. Where can I receive help in starting a new business?

A. The Baltimore County Small Business Resource Center is a partnership between the Department of Economic Development and the Baltimore County Chamber of Commerce.  The Small Business Resource Center offers new and existing business assistance with technical, financial and marketing issues free of charge.  Services include: Feasibility Studies, Strategic Planning, Market Analysis, Research and Business Plan Development and Loan Packages.

Q. What business licenses do I need?

A. To determine if you need a license, contact your Baltimore County Clerk of the Court at  410-887-2607 or call the State License Bureau at 410-260-6240. The Clerk's Office  hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. We are located on the second floor of the County Courts' Building, 401 Bosley Avenue, Towson, Maryland 21204.

A second resource is Business License Information System (BLIS)  connects you to information on permits and licenses you may need in order to start, relocate, or expand a business in Maryland. BLIS offers information on business licenses, occupational licenses, permitting information and business start-up information.

Q. What grants/monies are available for my business?

A. Grants, tax credits, low interest loans, and tax exempt bonds may be available based on the size of the business, its location, number of employees and there salary ranges, collateral of the business and owner, and the creation.retention of well-paying jobs in the County.

Commercial Revitalization provides low-interest loans, architectural services, and tax credits to improve and maintain older commercial areas of the County.  Programs are only eligible within the 13 designated districts.  Determine if you are in a district

Enterprise Zones - Businesses in the North Point and Southwest Enterprise Zones that expand and/or add employees are eligible for both County and Maryland state tax credits. Determine if you are in a Enterprise Zone

TheSmall Business Resource Center  can help you evaluate and understand funding options and your funding needs.  They can direct you to a variety of financial resources both within the public and private sector. These resources would include Maryland Department of Business and Conomic Development, U.S. Small Business Administration, private lenders and Baltimore County loans.

Other Financing Opportunities may exist both in from private banks, the County, State, and Federal government.  Our  Chief Financial Officer can work with you to find suitable finaincing.  Contact our Chief Financial Officer at 410-887-8000.

A. Basic demographics and statistical information for the County as a whole can be found on the Economic Development's Demographics and Maps page.  Data for specific business areas of the County can be found below.

BCinfobank (www.bcinfobank.com) is a partnership between the Baltimore County Public Library and the Department of Economic Development.  The site provides a comprehensive listing of demographic & business resources so that users may find data that fits their needs.
