Towson began as a small colonial town. Today, Towson has grown into a burgeoning metropolis 15 minutes from Baltimore City. More than 10,000 people work in downtown Towson, the largest unincorporated county seat in the continental United States.
Towson is a metro area destination, blending together corporate headquarters, entertainment venues, large and small retailers, educational institutions, government, and healthcare facilities. All within one compact area are the headquarters of Fortune 500’s Black & Decker and Whiting Turner Construction, offices of well known attorneys and engineers, movie and music theaters, nationally recognized retailers as well as small locally owned shops, Towson University and Goucher College, and the interconnected campuses of Sheppard Pratt, St. Joseph Medical Center, and GBMC HealthCare.
Towson is a shopper's dream destination. Major retailers anchor York, Dulaney Valley, and Joppa Roads, with an eclectic mix of local shops along the side streets of Allegheny, Pennsylvania and Chesapeake Avenues. The shopping centers include the Dulaney Shopping Center with Anne Taylor Loft, Chico's, and Omaha Steaks, the Towsontown Center anchored by Nordstrom's and Hecht's, and Towson Circle with Barnes and Noble Books, Trader Joe's, and Bahama Breeze restaurant. One of a kind shops include Thanks, Hon!, Towson Framing and Gallery, Jones Lighting, Stephan Adams shop, Sunny Surplus, the Hemp shop, and Nelson Coleman Jewelers.
Towson is developing into a mecca of dining alternatives from urbane white table cloth restaurants (Paolo's, Troia's, The Melting Pot) to eclectic ethnic (Thai One On, Kabob Hut, Jasmine Bistro, Olive and Sesame, Bahama Breeze) to fast take out (The Real Thing, Frisco Burrito, Pizan's Pizza) to neighborhood favorites (The Greene Turtle, Souris Saloon, Towson Diner). And for mid-afternoon or evening treat, one can choose from Beach Bums or Moxley's for ice cream, Wolford's for specialty pastries, Smoothie King or Zia's for frozen concoctions.
Towson is also a college town, with more than 20,000 students attending Towson University, Goucher College, Medix School, and TESST College. Entertainment opportunities include AMC General Movies at Towson Commons, Recher Theatre for bands, or browsing at Barnes and Noble.
Towson is conveniently located off three exits from the Baltimore Beltway (I-695), Dulaney Valley Road south, York Road south, and Providence Road south (See directions). Families, empty nesters, and young professionals choose Towson for its charming historic enclaves, traditional neighborhoods, luxury condominiums, and apartment communities.
