No matter where you go in Essex, you are no more than a few minutes from a river, cove or creek. Fingers of Chesapeake Bay tributaries bring the water to shorefront neighborhoods, public parks, marinas and popular restaurants such as River Watch and the Baltimore Yacht Club. Fishing, sailing and watching the sunset are as much part of Essex tradition as the annual Essex Day festival and July 4 fireworks lighting the skies over hundreds of boats and picnics along Middle River. Essex enjoys easy access to Baltimore City and I-95 via the Baltimore Beltway (I-695) and Route 702. A new extension of Maryland Route. 43, opening late 2005, will link Essex with the White Marsh growth area and over 1,000 acres zoned for new business development. This new Middle River Employment Center is projected to attract businesses that will employ up to 15,000 people. More than $100 million in recent private investment along Eastern Boulevard combines with $94 million in public investment in a major renewal of Essex-Middle River. Two major new neighborhoods are rising next to the traditional homes of Essex. WaterView, a neo-traditional community of 175 single-family detached homes, features tree-lined streets and parks. WaterView’s 96,000 square foot commercial center opens in 2004, anchored by a Mars Super Market, CVS and child care center. Hopewell Pointe, a new waterfront community of 214 single family detached homes and condominium units began construction in fall, 2002. A private marina, walking trails, heated community pool and spa, and public restaurant overlooking Hopkins Creek highlight the community. Nearby, a new 50-acre county park is under construction, with basketball and volleyball courts, athletic fields, picnic areas, walking trails and a community center.
