Towson, Md. (July 21, 2009) A $250,000 loan from Baltimore County is helping launch a new organic creamery in Glen Arm. When open to the public, the Prigel Family Creamery will process and sell organic milk products, including yogurt, ice cream, cheese and butter: Standing at the entrance to the 260-acre Bellevale Farms, Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith applauded farm owners Bobby and Pam Prigel for balancing over a century of farming tradition with innovation. "The Prigel family has farmed this land since 1895. Bobby had the vision to see a growing market for organic milk. The new products at the creamery will add value and another source of income that will help preserve this beautiful land for agricultural use." The Baltimore County loan will be used towards purchasing equipment and construction of an environmentally-sensitive 10,000 square foot creamery building on Long Gree Road. "We are grateful for the County's support of our business and their strong commitment to sustaining family farming," said Bobby Prigel. The Baltimore County Department of Economic Development has become one of the leading public agricultural industry advocates in Maryland. In 2009, the Department also became one of the leading public lenders to Baltimore County's agriculture industry, awarding over $700,000 in new loans. The loans cover a diverse cross section of the agriculture industry, from poultry to dairy and cattle to vineyards.
