Towson, Md. (March 18, 2008) With more than 370 life sciences companies in Maryland -- over 75 in the Baltimore region alone -- demand is growing for workers with pharmaceutical manufacturing and laboratory skills. Companies such as BD Diagnostic Systems, Shire Pharmaceuticals, MGI Pharma and Pharmaceutics International, Inc. are regularly recruiting for trained personnel. Under the leadership of the Baltimore County Department of Economic Development, Office of Workforce Development and the Baltimore County Executive's Regional Advisory Board for Business and Education, the region's life sciences companies and training organizations have come together to provide a coordinated, affordable curriculum designed to provide training in key areas of laboratory, bio and pharmaceutical manufacturing protocol. "Pharmaceutical and bio companies identified the skills they look for when recruiting and promoting workers," stated Sara R. Trenery, workforce development coordinator for the Baltimore County Department of Economic Development. "The region's colleges and training organizations stepped up to created a partnership committed to growing Baltimore's pool of qualified pharmaceutical manufacturing and laboratory workers." Courses are taught by professionals from the UMBC Training Centers, Community College of Baltimore County, Parenteral Drug Association (PDA), and the Biotechnical Institute of Maryland.
