$500,000 Baltimore County Loan Helps Multinational Pharmaceutical Company Grow

Towson, Md. (March 12, 2008) A $500,000 Business Growth loan from Baltimore County is helping expand capacity at Pharmaceutics International, Inc. (PII), a contract drug manufacturer in Hunt Valley, Maryland.  With the purchase of a second building, the firm has added 88,000 square feet of space for manufacturing and administration at 103 Beaver Court. The growing life sciences company has invested over $16 million for real estate purchase, equipment and building improvements. PII continues to manufacture drugs and develop formulations for large and small pharmaceutical companies at its nearby corporate headquarters on Gilroy Road.

Dr. Syed Abidi, President and CEO, founded Pharmaceuticals International, Inc. in 1994. By 1999, the company had 50 employees. As of 2008, the firm employs 325 workers.

"Pharmaceutics International's growth in Baltimore County demonstrates how the region's strengths in life sciences, research and manufacturing come together to produce a solid community of bio resources," stated David Iannucci, Executive Director, Baltimore County Department of Economic Development and member of the Governor's Life Sciences Advisory Board. "With pharmaceutical companies increasing the amount of work sent to contract manufacturing facilities, we see this sector as an area of opportunity for continued growth."

Contract pharmaceutical formation development involves taking a new pharmaceutical drug and developing the most effective way to deliver the drug to patients. The product is then used in Clinical Trials to establish safety and efficacy in humans. This process can take up to 10 years to get final approval from the FDA. The product is then marketed by PII customers in the United States and Europe.

PII (Pharmaceutics International, Inc.) is a multinational contract formulation development, Clinical Trial Materials (CTM), and commercial manufacturing company with corporate headquarters in Hunt Valley, Maryland. PII can manufacture a wide range of dosage forms covering solid, semi-solid and aseptic filling. These services are complemented by full analytical and regulatory support. The state of art cGMP facilities contain on-site manufacturing suites and analytical laboratories which have been inspected by both the FDA and EMEA.
