Smith, Olszewski Celebrate Dundalk Village Center Renaissance

Towson, Md. (October 15, 2007) Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith and Councilman John Olszewski Sr. joined members of the Dundalk community to celebrate a major step forward in the Dundalk renaissance, the newly renovated Dundalk Village Center.

"Since 1918, Dundalk Village Center has been a centerpiece of community life," stated Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith. "We are proud to stand here today to celebrate a new chapter for this historic town center and the entire Dundalk community."

"When the community came together as part of the UDAT (Urban Design Assistance Team), there was a clear call to preserve and renew Dundalk Village Center," said Councilman John Olszewski, Sr. "Today, we see the results in beautiful new apartments that already are attracting young professionals to downtown Dundalk."

Baltimore County has invested $3.2 million dollars toward the renovation of the Dundalk Village Shopping Center, which is being redeveloped by JMJ, Inc. The historic Center, designed by the firm of famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, has new shops, services and restaurants. The center’s transformed apartments, now called Heritage Commons, are being leased at market-rates and the first tenants have moved in. Outside, the Village Center has new awnings, landscaping, paint and windows.

The event comes amid rapid progress in Dundalk’s renaissance program. The County has purchased most of the Yorkway apartment complex and is working with the community on a new vision for this long-neglected property. A $2.5 million Dundalk Streetscape is complete, with new street furniture in Veteran’s Park, and new curbs, sidewalks, medians and street trees along Dundalk Avenue. A new $1.1 million entranceway for Watersedge and Turner Station adds an inviting welcome to these historic neighborhoods. Planning is underway for a new Dundalk Community Center.
