Towson, Md. (August 22, 2007) —Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith and First District Councilman Sam Moxley joined area citizens, community and business representatives today at the Catonsville Farmer’s Market to celebrate Money magazine’s selection of Catonsville as one of America’s “Best Places to Live.” The magazine’s 2007 listing ranked Catonsville 49 out of 100 small cities offering the best combination of economic opportunity, good schools, safe streets, things to do, and a sense of community. "We are thrilled that Catonsville has received national recognition as a great place to live, learn, and grow a business," stated Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith. "Of course, we've known it all the time." Money magazine noted that "Catonsville is undergoing a renaissance, thanks in large part to the University of Maryland at Baltimore County, which has transformed itself from a commuter school into a dynamic research center." “Catonsville’s great neighborhoods, strong schools, job opportunities, and affordable living have put this community in the national spotlight,” stated County Councilman Sam Moxley. The magazine editors also noted that "even as Catonsville grows, it still remains one of the more affordable areas in the state, and its schools are among the best in the metro area." As part of the celebration, the County Executive and Councilman Moxley presented commemorative citations to six institutions as major contributors to the quality of life for local residents: UMBC, Catonsville area public schools, Charlestown Retirement Community, the Community College of Baltimore County at Catonsville, the Greater Catonsville Chamber of Commerce, and St. Agnes Hospital.
