Bakery Express Moving to New Merritt Properties Building in Halethorpe

Towson, Md. (June 13, 2007)—Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith joined representatives from Bakery Express and Merritt Properties to break ground for a new manufacturing facility in Halethorpe. As lead tenant for the new 210,000 square foot building, Bakery Express will bring over 300 new jobs to Baltimore County's Southwest Enterprise Zone.

Consolidation

Bakery Express will consolidate three divisions into the new building, which will be developed and leased by Merritt Properties. Bakery Express provides baked goods to 1,100 7-Eleven stores in the Mid Atlantic, as well as serving restaurants and specialty stores through its Ms Desserts division. A third division, Jeanne's Gourmet, bakes goods for school and nonprofit fundraisers.

"We're pleased to be able to contribute to the success of this project with a significant loan to Bakery Express from Baltimore County's business loan funds. These funds were established to help companies grow and make this type of capital and real estate investment," said Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith. "Not only will there be a new, modern plant here, but Bakery Express will be adding new jobs."

Building for the Future

Georgetown Bakery Management Corporation, parent company of Bakery Express, has received a $500,000 loan from the County’s Small Business Loan Partnership and a $250,000 loan from the County’s Business Growth Fund. The loans will allow the company to purchase the 13-acre Halethorpe property and build the new facility.

Since its establishment in 1996, certified businesses in Baltimore County's Southwest Enterprise Zone have made $65 million in new capital and equipment investment and added 920 jobs in the Zone. New companies moving to the Enterprise Zone in 2007-08 will bring an additional 600 new jobs to this traditionally industrial area of Baltimore County. Companies in the Enterprise Zone are eligible for state and county property tax credits and tax credits for each new job brought to the Zone.
