Progress at Day Village, Shore Road, and Lyons Home

Work on the Day Village Pumping Station (on Avondale Road in Sparrows Point) began in the fall of 2007 and is expected to be completed by the end of November (or December). It is now 95 percent completed. The station is being rebuilt to raise it above the flood plain, at a cost of $1.3 million. Work also began this September (2007) to rehabilitate the Shore Road Pumping Station to the north of Lynch Cove.

To increase capacity and prevent overflows the County is investing $1.8 million to modernize both the structure and equipment. Work should be completed by December, say engineers, and is now about 80 percent finished. In addition, construction of the Lyons Home Pumping Station near Peach Orchard Creek is also coming to an end. It is 99 percent complete and when it goes on line, the old station will be demolished. This facility cost about $2.3 million.

Ebenezer Road Bridge Under Construction

The Ebenezer Road Bridge (Bridge No. 294), just north of Bird River Road over Windlass Run, has been repeatedly damaged by high water in recent years and is being replaced. The new bridge will be located south of the old one and the span will be increased from 12 feet to 80 to protect the structure from flooding. Work, which began in January, is projected to be completed by early 2009 and cost $1.5 million. During construction, traffic will continue to use the old bridge until the new one is finished.

Water Project on Morse Lane

A new water line is being installed this year on Morse Lane, between Riversedge Way and Lynhurt Road (ADC Map 45 E4). Begun in August, the new 12-inch line is being built to close a loop in the system which should improve water quality and add more capacity to the network. Engineers say that it will also make future utility repairs in the North Point area easier and reduce shut-offs. The new line is expected to be finished by December and will cost $900,000.

Expanded Recycling of Fluorescent Lamps, Rechargeable Batteries and More

Until recently, only the Eastern Sanitary Landfill Solid Waste Management Facility (ESL) in White Marsh accepted compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) from County residents. The collection program now includes two more locations - Western Acceptance Facility (WAF) in Halethorpe and the Baltimore County Resource Recovery Facility (BCRRF) in Cockeysville.

In addition to CFLs, these facilities will now accept fluorescent bulbs, mercury thermometers and thermostats, and lead-acid and rechargeable batteries. Recycling these materials helps to keep potentially dangerous substances, including mercury, out of landfills. Commercial loads of these materials are not accepted at any of Baltimore County's three drop-off centers.
