Catch the VIBE of Volunteerism

Are you interested in learning how you can improve your community? Are you searching for Community Service Learning Hours where the family can work together? The Baltimore County Volunteers (BCV) will host the first "Catch the VIBE" (Volunteers Impact By Example) meeting on April 2 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Join BCV for free gourmet coffee and food at Oasis Coffee and Cream, located at 105 Carroll Island Road in Middle River, while learning about the volunteer opportunities in your community. All ages are welcome and projects range from one-day projects to more regular instances. Volunteer opportunities include Earth Day events for families, the Marshy Point Nature Center, Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks, and the Glen L. Martin Museum.

The VIBE meeting location will rotate throughout the county each quarter. Pre-registration is requested.

Public Meeting on Rural Road Standards and Projects: April 14

The Department of Public Works will hold an open meeting on upcoming rural infrastructure projects on Tuesday, April 14 in the cafeteria at Hereford High School, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Hereford High is located at 17301 York Road in Parkton. The meeting is a follow-up to last year's approved Rural Roads Standards, which codified standards and policies for road and bridge maintenance in the County's rural areas. The meeting will be conducted in workshop style and will focus on bridge maintenance, resurfacing, road construction and traffic issues.

Baltimore County's Future Growth

The Office of Planning will present Matt D'Amico, of the Design Collective, for a creative educational session on growth in the County in the next few decades. The free session will be held on Monday, May 18, 6 p.m., at the Conference Center, Sheppard Pratt, 6501 N. Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21285. New Water Line for Belair Road May Cause Traffic Delays

A major water line is under constructed in Belair Road this fall to improve water capacity and pressure in the area and to insure adequate fire protection. Work began in October 2008 and may cause some traffic congestion.

Major Water Rehab for Essex and Middle River

Public Works engineers are cleaning and relining nearly 100,000' of water mains between Eastern Avenue, Stemmers Run Road, Middle River Road and Compass Road. The rehabilitation job, which includes Aero Acres and Hawthorne Park, began in June 2008 and will take about two years to complete. It's now 70 percent complete and will cost about $3 million. Crews are currently on winter shutdown and will resume work this month.

Sewers for Golupski and Phillips Roads

Baltimore County is installing a sewage collection system for Golupski and Phillips road residents. The system, designed to serve 28 residences on the Back River Neck Peninsula, consists of 2000 feet of sanitary sewer line and grinder pumps. Engineers estimate that the project, needed for the area's public health, should be completed by the fall.

Maryln Avenue Bridge to be Completed This Month

County Bridge No. 77, a 100' span that crosses Deep Creek, is being replaced at a cost of about $2 million. Construction, which began in February of last year, should be completed by the beginning of April, after which the traffic will return to normal.
