The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is offering assistance with the conversion to digital television that will take place in February 2009.
According to the Commission, many people (especially seniors citizens) have not applied for coupons to get the converter boxes necessary for this transition. The FCC would like to help by going to group meetings, conventions, or any large group gatherings to demonstrate the converter box and urge people to call in or go on-line to order the coupons for these boxes. A representative will "walk folks through" the process and demonstrate the set-up of the converter box.
Community groups, senior centers, PTAs, etc. are asked to call Cathy Minderlein at 301-725-0940 to arrange for a FCC representative to attend an upcoming meeting and help members with the February 17, 2009 Digital Television Transition.
Information: Cathy Minderlein, FCC, 9200 Farm House Lane, Columbia, MD 21046. Call 301-725-0940 or 301-725-1996.
Christmas Tree Collection will begin Monday, January 12 and continue for two weeks. County residents must have their trees out at the curb no later than Sunday, January 18 to ensure pickup.

Traffic Calming for Hazelwood Avenue

Bridge Replacement on Marlyn Avenue
County Bridge No. 77, a 100 foot span that crosses Deep Creek, is being replaced at a cost of about $2 million. Construction, which began in February, is expected to be completed by spring, 2009. During the project, one lane will be left open to traffic to minimize the impact on the community.

Ebenezer Road Bridge Now Open to Traffic
The Ebenezer Road Bridge (Bridge No. 294), just north of Bird River Road over Windlass Run, has been repeatedly damaged by high water in recent years and has been replaced. The new bridge, opened to traffic last month, has an increased span to protect the structure from flooding. Work, which began in January and is estimated to cost $1.5 million, will be completely finished before the end of the year when crews relocate a utility pole and clear the site.
