The Office of Planning will begin its Fall 2006 Speaker Series with a discussion on transit oriented design. The series will feature Dan Pointious, the Regional Director of Citizens Housing and Housing Association for Baltimore. Mr. Pontius will be showing a video titled, "Exploring possibilities for Baltimore's Red Line: Transit Around the Nation." The discussion will take place on Thursday, October 5 at 4 p.m. at the County Courts Building, Room 407, 401 Bosley Avenue in Towson (enter from the Courthouse Plaza).

The Honeygo Sewers, begun in May of 2005, are nearly finished, according to county engineers. County contractors should be completing nearly a mile of sewer line in the Honeygo area, including Cross and Chapel roads, before cold weather begins.

Responding to community health concerns, Public Works will begin constructing the Loreley Beach Connection System in September. The new system, which will take a year to complete and cost about $1.2 million, will serve about 80 homes southeast of the County's landfill. The project includes grinder pumps for the area.

Public Works will begin a major waterline replacement project along York Road, the site of frequent breaks in recent years. The first of three phases began on September 25, between the Beltway and Ridgely Road, where crews will replace the failing 12-inch line with a modern 24-inch diameter line. Construction will be done in tandem with the State Highway Administration's York Road Widening Project.

Baltimore County plans to invest $2.9 million in the Nollmeyer-Seneca Park Collection System to provide one hundred homes with public sewerage which are on failing septic tanks. The project, which includes grinder pumps and 5500 feet of pressure and gravity sewer pipe, is scheduled to begin in January. The work is being done in conjunction with the Seneca Park Pumping Station.

County contractors are completing a 12-inch water main in Towson to serve the Jefferson Building on West Chesapeake Avenue after Labor Day. The line will provide adequate sprinkler protection for the building which is undergoing major renovations.

Over the summer traffic engineers reviewed Perryvale and Vicky roads for traffic calming improvements, and construction plans were drawn up for the community's review. They were approved, and construction began on September 26. It should be finished in early October.

The stream restoration project bid opening is scheduled for October 24. Construction will begin late fall. The project limits are from the Riderwood Hills Park at Kenilworth downstream to the end of Marleigh Circle.

Public Works is rehabbing more than six thousand feet of sewer line in six areas this year and into next. The Department plans to spend $361,000 on lines which go through parts of Kenilworth, Burke, Sussex, Stemmers Run Road, Fullerton Avenue and Oakdale (in Rosedale Terrace).

The County's next "Ten-Year Solid Waste Plan" which will set guidelines for recycling, landfilling, waste prevention and waste-to-energy projects is now being drafted. As part of the process three meetings were held around the County in September and the final meeting will be held on October 3 at Summit Park Elementary at 7 p.m.

Baltimore County residents may drop off unwanted household chemicals, paints, pesticides, mercury thermometers, fluorescent light bulbs, ammunition, fireworks and automotive fluids at the Fall Household Hazardous Waste Collection event. It will be held on Saturday, October 21, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Maryland State Fairgrounds on York Road. Please use the Timonium Road entrance. No tires, automobile batteries, computers or other solid waste materials will be accepted.

The County Executive and the Mayor of Baltimore will officially sign a renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) this month. This MOU outlines the cooperative management and monitoring of the County and City's shared watersheds. Five areas of focus include Stormwater Management, Community Greening, Development and Redevelopment, Public Health, and Trash.

DEPRM implements a regionally renowned stream restoration program. Read this informative publication, which highlights DEPRM's stream restoration accomplishments. DEPRM's program incorporates project planning and design, widespread communication and support, construction and post-restoration follow-up. The program integrates state-of-the art techniques with an environmentally sensitive approach to stabilizing streams and reducing sediment loads, in turn enhancing stream morphology ecological function, water quality, and aquatic habitat. The EPA Mid-Atlantic Integrated Assessment program (MAIA) produced this document to help share knowledge between state and local governments, regional offices, and non-governmental organizations.
