Seneca Park's Failing Septic Systems Gets Relief

Baltimore County is investing $2.9 million in the Nollmeyer-Seneca Park Collection System to provide 127 homes, which are on failing septic tanks with public sewerage. The project, which includes grinder pumps and 5500 feet of pressure and gravity sewer pipe, got underway last February (2007). The project is now proceeding in conjunction with the Seneca Park Pumping Station project and is expected to be finished in September.

Water Tank at Chapel Hill Elementary

Public Works recently finished a two million-gallon, water storage tank on the site of Chapel Hill Elementary, which will service the Honeygo area. According to engineers, the elevated tank - 90 feet tall and costing about $4.7 million - will provide "pressure equalization during high-demand periods and help maintain adequate flow capacity for fire protection." Plans also call for a chlorination system, which will be finished in the spring of 2009.

Herring Run Interceptor

Repairs to the Herring Run Sewer Interceptor in the area adjacent to Perring Parkway, from the City line to Putty Hill Road, are expected to begin in the summer or early fall. Crews will rehabilitate 6000 feet of sewer line and approximately 44 manholes. The project, which will cost $800 thousand, will take about nine months and should be finished by early 2009.

New Mains for Joppa and Chesapeake

Public Works plans to improve water pressure and enhance fire protection with the construction of new water lines on Joppa Road (west of Bosley) and Chesapeake Avenue (from Charles Street Avenue to Burnbrae Road). This October, contractors will begin replacing more than 3000 feet of ancient, six-inch diameter, cast iron water line on Joppa with a 16-inch, ductile iron main. The work, which will extend from Central Avenue to Chestnut Avenue, should improve service to the community, including Loyola High School.

At about the same time contractors will begin installing 2000 feet of new line on Chesapeake Avenue in the heart of west Towson. This new main will connect several dead-end pipes and will "close the loop" in the system, allowing the water to circulate more efficiently and reducing stagnation, say engineers. The project will cost $1.7 million and should be completed by late spring, 2009.
