Landlords Must Register Rental Units

County officials have announced that the new Rental Registration Law is now in effect, and that owners of most residential rental units in buildings with one to six units must be inspected, registered and licensed by the county on or before July 1, 2008. A landlord who fails to comply with this law is subject to a civil penalty of $1,000.

This law, initiated by the County Council and passed on December 19, extends a pilot program in certain neighborhoods to cover the entire county. The purpose of the law is to protect the safety, health and welfare of tenants of by creating an additional procedure for the enforcement of county codes and violations. Tenants of larger apartment complexes are already protected by the County's Livability Code.

Water Tank at Chapel Hill Elementary (May Update and Correction)

In June (2007), Public Works began building a two million-gallon, water storage tank on the site of Chapel Hill Elementary to service the Honeygo area. According to engineers, the elevated tank - which will be 90 feet tall and cost about $4.7 million - will provide "pressure equalization during high-demand periods and help maintain adequate flow capacity for fire protection." Plans also call for a chlorination system as part of the project which will be finished in the spring of 2009. The tank's foundations were in place before the end of October and construction on the structure began in November. It is now 70 percent complete, a little ahead of schedule.
