Digital Television Transition

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is offering assistance with the conversion to digital television that will take place in February 2009.

According to the Commission, many people (especially seniors citizens) have not applied for coupons to get the converter boxes necessary for this transition. The FCC would like to help by going to group meetings, conventions, or any large group gatherings to demonstrate the converter box and urge people to call in or go on-line to order the coupons for these boxes. A representative will "walk folks through" the process and demonstrate the set-up of the converter box.

Community groups, senior centers, PTAs, etc. are asked to call Cathy Minderlein at 301-725-0940 to arrange for a FCC representative to attend an upcoming meeting and help members with the February 17, 2009 Digital Television Transition.

Information: Cathy Minderlein, FCC, 9200 Farm House Lane, Columbia, MD 21046. Call 301-725-0940 or 301-725-1996.

Now Under Construction: the Dolfield Boulevard Bridge

Construction of the Dolfield Boulevard Bridge over Red Run officially began in early October. The $8 million dollar structure, which will be 420 feet long, is part of a major long-range plan to provide traffic capacity for the expanding Owings Mills community. Engineers expect that construction, which will help link Lakeside Blvd. and Reisterstown Road, will require at least two years.

Bridge Repair on Davis Avenue; Road Closed for a Month

A bridge on Davis Avenue south of Old Court (ADC Map 31 G-5) will be closed for repair beginning January 5. It is scheduled to reopen February 13. The bridge, located near the Patapsco State Park, requires a new wing wall, say engineers. The Department of Public Works estimates that the project will cost $40,000. During construction detours will be posted.
