Belair Road – TAP Panel Report

On November 16, 2011, Baltimore City and County along with the Urban Land Institute of Baltimore released “Revitalizing the Belair Road Corridor: A ULI Advisory Services Technical Assistance Panel Report.” With the support of Baltimore Mayor, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and Baltimore County Executive, Kevin Kamenetz, the report focuses on developing a variety of strategies that aim to revitalize the Belair Road Corridor, which serves as a gateway that links both the City and County. The report includes such recommendations as façade improvements, streetscape enhancements, branding and marketing key nodes along the corridor, as well as ideas for strengthening the communities that live along the corridor.

Hess Road Bridge Hearing

Harford County's Department of Public Works held a public input meeting on the replacement plans for the Hess Road Bridge, which links Baltimore and Harford counties, on October 11. Baltimore County shares the cost of construction, but Harford County’s Department of Public Works has the lead role in planning and execution. Copies of the meeting minutes are available on line through the Harford County, Maryland web site.

Phoenix Road Bridge Update

The Phoenix Road Bridge – a City-owned span over Gunpowder Falls and the NCR Trail which was closed for repairs last year – now has an alternating-one-way traffic signal control system which will allow both east and west-bound traffic to use the bridge during the closure. It went live November 30.

Mays Chapel Reservoir

The Mays Chapel Reservoir on Reservoir Road is currently undergoing structural repairs. The reservoir, which has been off line for more than a year, is being coated with an impervious material.  Work is now 95 percent complete and, say engineers, should be finished in November, not October as earlier reported.

Jericho Covered Bridge Public Meeting

The historic Jericho Covered Bridge, spanning Little Gunpowder Falls east of Kingsville, received a Federal matching grant of $1.3 million and Public Works engineers have scheduled a major renovation for 2012, or early 2013. The Department of Public Works held a public meeting on December 8 to discuss plans for the renovation.

Work on New Water Pipe for York Road Going Slowly

Baltimore County’s contractors are replacing 9,500 feet of old water line in York Road, between Ridgely and Padonia. The new 24-inch line, double the diameter of the old line, is expected to cost $5 million and take one to two years to install. The project, say County engineers, is designed “to build redundancy into the system." The County’s contractor, Burgermeister Bell, started the project April 2010 and should be finished by June 2012. (The original completion plan – December, 2011 – was foiled by September’s bad weather.) The project is about 71 percent finished, say engineers.

Vernon Road Bridge Replacement

The Department of Public Works is planning a complete replacement of the Vernon Road Bridge, Bridge No. 523 in the County’s bridge inventory. The two-lane bridge, 20 feet wide and 29 feet long, spans the Second Mine Branch. The replacement could begin as early as next summer and require two to three months. The expected cost is $700,000. A public meeting was held on the proposed work March 24, 2010.
