Landmarks Preservation Commission Meeting

The Baltimore County Landmarks Preservation Commission will meet on Thursday, April 8, at 6 p.m. in the Jefferson Building, Room 104, 105 W. Chesapeake Avenue in Towson. Please check the web site for the meeting agenda and any last minute schedule changes.

Walking and Bicycling Planning Workshops Scheduled

The Baltimore County Department of Planning is hosting four citizen workshops to seek public input for an action plan to construct pedestrian and bicycle improvements in western Baltimore County.  The plan area includes the urban sections of  County Council Districts 1, 2, 3 and 4.  The workshops will enable citizens to discuss their experiences walking and bicycling in the County, and suggest opportunities for improvements to sidewalks and crossings, on-street bicycle facilities and off-road trails.
 
Citizens unable to attend one of the meetings can still provide comments by completing the online survey.

Compost Bin and Rain Barrel Sale

On Saturday April 24, Baltimore County will host a joint compost bin/rain barrel sale on the parking lot of IKEA in White Marsh, 8352 Honeygo Boulevard.  The sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine. Compost bins - valued at $80 - will be available for $35 including tax. Rain barrels - valued at $90 - will be available for $45 including tax. The high-tech barrels include anti-mosquito screens and overflow discharge lines. Compost bins and rain barrels will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Cash, check, or credit cards (Visa, MasterCard or Discover) will be accepted at this event.

Spring 2010 Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event

On Sunday April 11, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Texas Landfill drop off center on Warren Road, between York Road and Beaver Dam Road, Baltimore County residents may drop off unwanted household chemicals, paints, pesticides, mercury thermometers, fluorescent light bulbs, ammunition, fireworks, and automotive fluids.

Public Meeting: Rural Roads, April 20

On Tuesday, April 20 the Department of Public Works will hold its annual public meeting on the status of rural roads and bridges at Oregon Ridge. This meeting addresses bridge repair and replacement, road re-surfacing, and traffic issues in the County's rural areas - though primarily in Council District 3. The meeting is scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m. in the Sequoia Room, and will be conducted as an informal workshop (where the public can discuss issues with the County's bridge, road and traffic engineers, one-on-one) rather than as an open forum for speakers.

Water Work in Glyndon to Begin in May

Public Works will begin a major waterline replacement project for parts of Glyndon in May. The Department of Public Works will replace 9,000 feet of pipe in parts of Central Avenue, Butler Road, Waugh Avenue, Prospect Avenue, Worthington Hill and Fisk Avenue. Construction, estimated at $2 million, should be finished by the spring 2011.

Bridge Replacement on Gunpowder Road

Public Works began replacing the 40 foot-long Gunpowder Road Bridge over Georges Run in August 2009. The project which began with utility re-location work by BGE, will cost $700,000. It should be finished by the spring, say engineers. Detours are currently in place.

Water Pumping Station Rehab In Timonium

Public Works will begin replacing the motor controls (and valves) at its water pumping station on Westdale Court in Timonium in July 2009. The rehabilitation, which is estimated to cost $900,000 is expected to take a year and a half and be finished before the end of 2010. Work is now 60 percent complete.

Thornton Mill Road Bridge

Thornton Mill Road Bridge (No. 193) over Western Run will be renovated. Construction, which is expected to cost $700,000, is planned for this spring and is expected to be completed by October. Thornton Road will be posted for detours before construction begins.

Eagle Mill Bridge to be Replaced

Public Works plans to replace the Eagle Mill Bridge over Little Falls. Crews will begin the project in May. The new 35-foot span is estimated to cost $700,000 and should be completed by October. During construction detours will be posted.

More than a Mile of New Water Pipe for York Road

Beginning in April, Baltimore County's contractors will begin replacing 9,500 feet of old water line in York Road, between Ridgely and Padonia. The new 24-inch line (double the diameter of the old line) is expected to cost $5 million and take one to two years to install. The project, say County engineers, is designed "to build redundancy into the system."

Timonium Pumping Station Rehab

Public Works is renovating the Merryman Branch Pumping Station near Padonia Road this year (2010). The project, which will cost $700,000, will include fence gates, new pump motors, impellers and improved lighting. Construction will be finished in August 2011.

Harris Mill Road Bridge

Baltimore County will replace the Harris Mill Road Bridge (No. 191) over Ebaughs Creek. Construction to replace the 20-year-old structure will begin in July and should be finished by the end of October. The new concrete span, which is 30 feet long (same length as the old one), will be slightly wider (22 feet) than the old one and will be a single-span structure, eliminating the central support. The design also includes a stone form liner which gives the appearance of traditional stone construction, according to engineers. The project is expected to cost $550,000.

Major Overhaul for Sewer Pumping Station

Public Works began a major renovation of the Springdale B Sewage Pumping Station on Pot Spring Road in January. The work, which will cost $1.3 million, is scheduled to be completed in March of next year. The project is part of the County's agreement with the EPA to improve the sanitary sewer system.
