Replacement of the Big Falls Road Bridge

The two-lane, Big Falls Road Bridge (No. 73) over the Gunpowder is under construction. The structure, a concrete arch bridge, had been showing signs of deterioration and cracking before it was closed last fall. Engineers expect the work to cost $1.8 million and require a year to fourteen months to complete. Completion is expected in October. During the closure and construction period, traffic will be detoured from Big Falls to Bernoudy to Wiseburg to York to Monkton roads.

The Long Green Pike Bridge

Repairs to Bridge No. 176, the Long Green Pike Bridge, started in early June. The 28-foot span will be replaced with a 50-foot structure of pre-stressed concrete. The bridge, built in 1916 and spanning Long Green Creek, has been posted to restrict vehicles weighing over ten tons and was temporarily repaired last year in anticipation of a complete replacement and widening of the old structure this summer. Construction, which will be finished by the end of August, is expected to cost $300 thousand.
