Public Works is replacing more than a mile of sewer line along Herbert Run near Southwestern Blvd. in order to improve the sanitary system by reducing water infiltration. Construction on the new interceptor replacement (begun in November 2006) will cost more than $6 million. The project, which includes three tunnels and goes under two rail lines, has been impeded by tunneling issues. It is expected to be completed in October.

Until recently, only the Eastern Sanitary Landfill Solid Waste Management Facility (ESL) in White Marsh accepted compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) from County residents. The collection program now includes two more locations - Western Acceptance Facility (WAF) in Halethorpe and the Baltimore County Resource Recovery Facility (BCRRF) in Cockeysville.
In addition to CFLs, these facilities will now accept fluorescent bulbs, mercury thermometers and thermostats, and lead-acid and rechargeable batteries. Recycling these materials helps to keep potentially dangerous substances, including mercury, out of landfills. Commercial loads of these materials are not accepted at any of Baltimore County's three drop-off centers.
