Americans With Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines Available Free Through the U.S. Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board (Also Called the Access Board). These are building standards for new and altered buildings. Also ask for proposed guidelines (sometimes referred to as the Interim Rule for State and Local Governments) for courthouses and juvenile detention centers. (The final rule for State and Local Governments is expected by the end of this year). Call 1-800-872-2253. Later this year, the Access Board should be publishing ADA guidelines for play facilities.

"The ADA Cost Catalog for Access Modifications" written by the Adaptive Environments Center, Inc. under contract with the U.S. Department of Education's National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research. The catalog provides materials and labor costs for typical ADA access modifications such as modifying doors, installing elevators, installing signage, and installing or modifying public telephones. Other Documents of Interest: National Association of Counties' booklet of "Model County Programs for Serving Persons with Disabilities." Each year NACO and the National Organization on Disability honor counties serving Americans with Disabilities. The Award for Excellence program, supported by J.C. Penny, provides $1000 to a NACO member county with an outstanding program or project enhancing the ability of people with disabilities to participate in the programs and services of county government.
