Life Insurance

This overview of Life Insurance benefits applies only to those employees hired on and after July 1, 1997. If you are a County employee or retiree hired prior to that date, please contact the County Insurance Division (410-887-2568) for information about your Life Insurance Benefits.

Who is Eligible for Life Insurance?

All full-time Baltimore County employees and part-time employees working 30 or more hours in a 35 hour position or 34 or more hours in a 40 hour position are eligible for Life Insurance benefits. Coverage for spouses and dependents is not offered through Baltimore County.

Basic and Supplemental Options

Basic Life provides Life Insurance coverage in the amount of your annual salary rounded up to the nearest $1,000. You can also purchase Optional additional coverage of $10,000 or $20,000.

Cost of Life Insurance

The County pays 80 percent of the premium cost for Basic Life. The premium amount is negotiated with the Life Insurance carrier on an annual basis. The Optional additional coverage is not subsidized by Baltimore County. The cost for those options is $1/$1000/Month ($10/Mo for $10,000 and $20/Mo for $20,000). For 2007, the cost of Life insurance is .49/1,000.  If you have $50,000 coverage, the total premium is .49 x 50 ($24.50/month).  Your share of that cost is 20% ($4.90 per month).

Enrollment in Life Insurance Plans

Employees enrolling in the Life Insurance plan(s) within 31 days of employment with Baltimore County are guaranteed acceptance into the plan(s). If you do not enroll during that time, you are considered a Late Entrant and must complete a Statement of Health that will be reviewed by the County's Life Insurance Carrier. Acceptance of Late Entrants into the plans is not guaranteed.

Life Insurance Beneficiary Designation

When you enroll in the County's Life Insurance plan(s) you are required to name who will receive the Life Insurance proceeds in the event of your death. It's very important to review that designation—especially if you have changes in family status (death of a family member, divorce, marriage, birth/adoption of a child, etc.) If you want to review your designation, or make a new one, contact the County's Insurance Division for the necessary forms.
