Through the Baltimore County Home Team, volunteers provide services to eligible older persons who have limited social supports and need assistance to remain in their own homes. Some of these services volunteers offer include: friendly visiting once a week; telephone visiting via regular phone calls; running errands; escort trips for medical appointments; shopping; and limited handyman service.
Persons receiving these services are Baltimore County residents age 60 or over who have been referred by caseworkers. Volunteers, who are asked to make a six-month commitment of approximately one hour a week, are matched with people in their neighborhoods. The program, which operates through the Baltimore County senior center network, provides ongoing training and recognition to volunteers. This program reflects an old-fashioned, caring sense of community, providing reassurance and security to older persons wishing to remain in their own homes and at the same time providing satisfaction to volunteers.
"Visits with my homebound friend are a time of joyful discovery."
