Reisterstown Senior Center is an active, lively center providing classes, activities, and services for seniors age 60 and over. Welcome to our center! You can read about all the exciting happenings we offer at the center in our monthly newsletter, "The Reister's Town Crier" (PDF).
Physical fitness, educational, or just for socializing with others while learning, we have a class type for you! One of three physical education classes, or aerobics class, will help your physical wellness. Expand your mind by taking a class from many offered by the Community College of Baltimore County at the center. Maybe your thing is to have fun while learning! Our stained glass, ceramics, or mah jongg, may be just the thing you're looking for.
So maybe you're not interested in a class. There's still a lot to do at the center. We offer two weekly bingo games, cards, billiards, board games, and our Songbirds choral group for your enjoyment. Not to mention monthly dance parties, trips, special events, and guest speaker presentations throughout the year. There are no membership fees to join the center, but there may be some charges for classes and activities.
Reisterstown is one of 16 nationally accredited senior centers operated by the Baltimore County Department of Aging. The Department of Aging and the Reisterstown Senior Center Council work together to ensure the smooth day-to-day operation of the center.
There are many volunteer positions available at the center. We can use front desk receptionists, lunch servers, membership registers, teachers, committee members, and more. We have a federally sponsored lunch program at noon each day that could use your help.
There are many Baltimore County Department of Aging services available at the center too. Some include health insurance counseling, home team, community outreach, center connection, and volunteer central. Of course the center is also your source for the many printed publications that the Department of Aging distributes to the communities in Baltimore County. Stop in to pick one up that interests you today!
Reisterstown Senior Center began as a two-day-a-week program in space provided by the Reisterstown United Methodist Church at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on December 3, 1977. Eula Marshall (current hostess of "The Time of Your Life" cable television program) was the driving force behind its formation. A third day of operation was granted and the federally funded lunch program was introduced in 1977. The group became part of the Baltimore County Department of Aging in 1979 and extended the program to five days per week.
An addition built to the historic Hannah More Academy building became the center's permanent home in 1983. The year 2000 saw us gain additional space in the original building and the addition of a new commercial kitchen. We have along the way increased membership too. From what started as a few people in 1973 has grown to over 400 today. We will continue to offer programs and grow to meet the needs of seniors in the community.
So if you haven't done so already, stop by (get directions, call 410-887-1143, or e-mail reisterstownsc@baltimorecountymd.gov. Take advantage of those opportunities that are of interest to you. Visit the aging calendar to find out about special programs and activities at other county senior centers.
