Bykota is not only the acronym that represents Be Ye Kind One To Another, but also the spirit that embodies the Bykota membership. We, the membership and staff of the Bykota Senior Center, invite you to visit the center to learn of the many ways you can expand your world and enrich your life through fellowship, exercise, lifelong learning, volunteerism, and much more. Learn about Bykota's special programs and events by reading the "Bykota Buzz" (PDF), a monthly newsletter which describes the special activities of the month as well as ongoing programs.
Join the Bykota Senior Center and quickly become a member of an active environment for adults age 60 and over. Take advantage of Bykota's extensive A-Z selection of courses, programs and services provided by an award-winning agency, the Baltimore County Department of Aging. Bykota Senior Center is one of 18 nationally accredited senior centers in Baltimore County meeting the standards of the National Institute of Senior Centers. Membership to Bykota is free, but an annual donation is encouraged. Donors receive a free subscription to the Baltimore County Department of Aging's Senior Digest publication.
Have you ever considered taking a class or exploring a hobby? Bykota offers over 30 different regularly scheduled classes and activities including a state-of-the-art fitness center. Are you interested in ballroom dancing lessons? Bykota offers a ten-week class. Is opera your passion? Join us!
Have you wondered whether yoga is the right exercise program for you? Try it! Do you need to improve your balance or stairclimbing ability? Bykota offers a class called Complete Balance, taught by a physical therapist. Como esta usted? Yes, try Spanish, French or both at Bykota. Are you interested in painting, drawing, stained glass or ceramics? We offer several different classes in the arts.
Have you wondered what a mouse has to do with a computer? Bykota offers a beginning, intermediate and Internet computer class. If bingo is your pleasure join us every Wednesday. Are you interested in being an informed consumer? Join us for information from AARP, local business owners, etc., or learn of advances in medical technology and health promotion topics with a monthly lecture series provided by medical professionals.
Bykota's fitness center is operated in partnership with Towson University, School of Health Professions. The center is equipped with treadmills, recumbent bikes and steppers, strength training circuits, flexibility and stretching stations, free weights and more! Participants receive a fitness assessment, orientation and individual exercise plan to address their fitness needs.
Learn how low-impact aerobics, a current events class called Contemporary Issues, our new "senior friendly" fitness center, basketball, Tai Chi Chuan and much more can transform your life. Simply visit the Bykota Senior Center and you can develop an activity program that is compatible with your needs and interests. Let the fun begin at Bykota Senior Center where you can enjoy our daily activities, plus a wide range of special events throughout the year including classical recitals, dances, dinners, happy hours, holiday celebrations, intergenerational programs, musical entertainment, noted speakers, outdoor concerts, sing-alongs, theater groups, and much more. Fees may be associated with some classes and special events.
Bykota Senior Center volunteers are integral to the daily operation of the senior center. Staff value and rely on volunteers to help create a welcoming, efficient environment that makes everyone feel comfortable, respected and part of a team. Make a difference in your life by giving your time as a volunteer.
Have you had aspirations to take on a leadership role? Consider becoming involved with the Senior Center Council. If you enjoy clerical duties and meeting people, volunteer as a receptionist. If food preparation or clerical assistance is of interest to you, consider volunteering in the nutrition area where Bykota Senior Center serves lunch daily as part of a federally subsidized program called Eating Together. Are you a former teacher or have an expertise in a hobby? Volunteer as an instructor.
The opportunities to serve as a volunteer at Bykota are limitless. The following volunteer positions are waiting for the right person: developing partnerships, marketing, programming committee, publicity, special event chairperson, gardening, registration volunteers, and gift shop sales.
If you are a Baltimore County resident and are 60 or over, various services are available if you meet established criteria. Our Center Connection Specialist at the Bykota Senior Center is available daily from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. and by phone at 410-887-3094. The Center Connection Specialist integrates less active older adults into the senior center day by helping to develop an individualized schedule to meet the needs of her clients.
Our Community Outreach Specialist is available by phone at 410-887-4327. This individual assists clients by providing information about services and benefits such as Meals on Wheels, property tax credit forms, etc. Appointments are recommended.
Bykota Senior Center was established in 1962 in the Towson Fire Hall and has relocated several times until 1983, when it was moved to its present location, formerly the site of Towson High School. Located in the northern section of Baltimore County, Bykota serves older adults in the Rodgers Forge, Loch Raven, Lutherville, Glen Dale, Riderwood, Stoneleigh, Anneslie, and Ruxton areas.
A growing membership of 1557, this year the highest among Baltimore County Senior Centers, is a testament to the vitality, programs and commitment of our membership, volunteers, and staff. We, the Bykota Senior Center membership and staff, look forward to making your acquaintance.
