History

The Cockeysville Senior Center is a nationally accredited, very active senior center which provides programs and services that support the senior residents of Baltimore County in their efforts to remain healthy, active and independent members of the community. Read about current happenings and events in our monthly newsletter, "Cockeysville Chronicle" (PDF), the monthly publication that highlights the classes and programs scheduled at the center as well as the services provided by the Baltimore County Department of Aging.

The Cockeysville Senior Center opened in 1999 and is adjacent to the old Cockeysville Elementary School, which now houses the Warren Place Apartments. This center is unique because it is the only Baltimore County senior center that has a senior housing development and a fitness center located on its premises. Cockeysville was the first "senior friendly" fitness center to open in a Baltimore County senior center. It has state-of-the-art equipment that includes treadmills, recumbent bikes and steppers, strength training circuits, flexibility stations, free weights and more. The fitness center project is operated in partnership with Towson University College of Health Professions.

The Cockeysville Senior Center serves members of the urban and suburban areas of Baltimore County. Also located on the premises are a tennis court, a basketball court and two ball fields, which are maintained by the Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks. This location is very accessible to public transportation, grocery stores and medical facilities. The Cockeysville Senior Center has been open since March 1999.

Look at What’s Happening at the Cockeysville Senior Center!

The Cockeysville Senior Center is one of 19 senior centers located throughout Baltimore County. In addition to the Fitness Center, we also have the following fitness classes: Chi Gong, Modified Exercise, Senior Rhythms, Senior Strength and Fitness, Seniorcize, Tai Chi and Yoga. On-going classes and programs include: Bingo, a Book Club, “The Good Old Days,” Current Events, Nutrition Education, Computer classes, Ceramics, an All Media Art class and Instructional and Social Bridge. Bingo is scheduled twice a week at the center. Recreational programs include: a gentle walking program, miniature golf, pool and shuffleboard. A variety of Consumer Education, Health Education and Health Screenings are scheduled at the center.

A Center Council meeting is provided bi-monthly to keep center and community members abreast of the new classes and special programs planned for the future.

Are You Looking for Volunteer Opportunities?

There are many volunteer opportunities available at the center. Volunteers are needed to assist with day to day operations of the senior center. These opportunities include: Front Desk Receptionist, Gift Shop Receptionist, “Eating Together” volunteers and assistance with clerical functions such as filing, class and membership registration and tour guides, as well as positions as members of the Executive Board. The center council also sponsors several community projects which include: mailings for departmental and non-profit organizations, knitting blankets and baby caps for area hospitals, collection of  non-perishable food items to make baskets for seniors in need, a mitten tree, and a pull tab collection for the Ronald McDonald House.
