Q. What is HealthScope?

A. HealthScope is the program of the Baltimore County Department of Aging which provides health and wellness information to senior adults through presentations, demonstrations, exercise classes and individual medical screenings. Usually these services are provided at a senior center near you.

Q. My mother is in ill health and has difficulty bathing and cooking her meals. I live out of town and cannot give her the assistance she needs. She wants to remain in her home for as long as possible. What can I do to keep her in her own home?

A. The Department of Aging provides case management services, coordinating various resources which may be needed to help keep elderly persons in the community. Call Maryland Access Point of Baltimore County at 410-887-2594 for an initial assessment to see if she qualifies for services, and for the name of a Community Outreach Specialist who can assist with obtaining services if she is eligible.

Q. I recently had an operation and, although I can walk short distances with a cane, I need a wheelchair for longer distances. Medicare will not cover the cost. Where can I obtain an inexpensive wheelchair?

A. The Department of Aging's Loan Closet lends wheelchairs to Baltimore County residents age 60 or over. The only cost is a refundable deposit of $25. Also available are tub rails, bath chairs, walkers, and other types of equipment at no cost. Call 410-887-2594 to determine availability of equipment.
