Q. I would like to move into a senior citizen apartment where the rent is moderate. Where can I find a listing of these apartments?

A.
The Housing section of this website has a list of senior apartments. The Housing section also has a list of assisted living facilitiescontinuing care retirement communities, and nursing homes. You can also call the Department of Aging's Senior Information and Assistance office at 410-887-2594 and ask to have a list mailed to you.

Q. Is there affordable transportation available for people who use wheelchairs or my family members?

A
. Yes, CountyRide is an affordable specialized transportation program serving Baltimore County residents, including senior citizens aged 60 and over, disabled residents aged 21 and over, and rural county residents. You must complete a registration application prior to using CountyRide and may purchase tickets in advance. For additional information call 410-887-2080.

Q. I have been taking care of my parents for over two years, and I need help. Financially there is no problem, but I feel that I am alone and have no one to talk to about my problems. What can I do?

A
. As a part of the "Sandwich Generation" you are not alone and your feelings are very common. The Caregiver Connection is a newsletter published by the Department of Aging, available at no cost, which gives helpful hints and ideas to caregivers. An annual conference is held in November. There are various support groups for caregivers which give the opportunity to talk to others with a similar situation. Funds for respite care may be available. Call 410-887-2594 to discuss options available to you and the ones you care for.

Q. Is the Department of Aging the only agency to work with senior citizens?

A. No, the Department of Social Services provides Adult Protective Services for vulnerable adults of all ages, as well as other programs. You can reach them at 410-853-3000. The Health Department provides the Adult Evaluation and Review Services, as well as home health services. You can reach the Health Department at 410-887-3740.
