Q. What is Eating Together?

A.
Eating Together is a federally funded meals program for seniors age 60 and over and their spouses of any age. It is part of a cost effective nationwide nutrition program in which senior volunteers serve meals. Benefits of the program include an opportunity to socialize with others, make new friends and learn about other programs and services of the Baltimore County Department of Aging.

Q. Where are Eating Together meals served in Baltimore County?

A
. The meals are served in 40 different locations throughout the county: senior centers and nutrition sites located in community buildings, senior residence buildings and other locations.

Q. What kinds of meals are served at Eating Together?

A.
Complete and balanced meals that include a variety of well-liked entrees are available. Each meal provides one-third of the daily Recommended Dietary Allowance for seniors. The week's meals are averaged to provide less than 30 percent of calories from fat and less than 1000 milligrams of sodium. Depending on the location, both regular and kosher meals, and midday or evening meals are offered. Holiday theme meals and occasional box lunches are provided. Senior center council sponsored evening meals are offered at some locations.

Q. What is the cost of the meals in the Eating Together Program?

A
. Since there is no set charge for the meals, voluntary anonymous contributions towards the cost of the meals are gratefully accepted. Proceeds enables the program to serve more meals. Senior center council evening meals are charged for at the meal cost ($5 - $7).

Q. What kind of information on healthy eating is provided through the Eating Together Program?

A.
The program provides regular information on the latest in nutrition and healthy eating. Flyers, brochures, nutrition information programs, cooking demonstrations and a comprehensive guide to healthy eating are provided. In addition, all new Eating Together program participants are screened for nutrition problems and referred to a registered dietitian for consultation as necessary.
